Description

CVLS is recruiting and equipping a new cadre of eviction volunteer attorneys! We are the only legal aid office in Chicago that represents both low income landlords and tenants. Meeting our clients’ needs in this area is of crucial importance. For landlords, renting out a portion of their home generates a primary source of income. Losing that rent could mean falling behind on a mortgage. For tenants, housing is a the foundation for the rest of their lives. If that foundation is undermined, everything else falls apart. Many of our clients also depend on housing subsidies. A loss of a subsidized tenancy is not just a loss of a particular apartment, it is the loss of affordable housing anywhere in Chicago.

The need for quality pro bono representation in eviction-related matters is a great as it’s ever been. To that end, CVLS is hosting a three part training on housing law:

Part One: Eviction Basics. We will cover the fundamentals of housing law: what is a lease, how to terminate the lease, potential defenses and counterclaims, and the sources of various tenant protections.

These trainings are a great opportunity for any attorney interested in a new area of law. Volunteers who continue in CVLS’s eviction pro bono program will have access to templates, a handy eviction guide, and staff supervision for their new cases.
