Rebekah Speaks with Female Community Leaders

Last week, a group of female community and security leaders visited Chicago as a part of the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program. On Thursday, September 25, CVLS GAL for Minors Program Director Rebekah Rashidfarokhi spoke with the group of 18 women, from 18 different countries, about CVLS and our work to provide pro bono civil legal aid services to the poor and working poor of Chicago.

In conjunction with the Bureau of Education and Cultural AffairsOffice of International Visitors, the State Department's "Women Leaders: Promoting Peace and Security" project aimed to: 

  • Highlight support for women’s role in conflict resolution, national reconciliation, and peace keeping and humanitarian relief operations;
  • Explore international policies, laws, and institutions that support the inclusion of women in creating, sustaining, and promoting peace;
  • Discuss with academics, nonprofit institutions, and international organizations approaches to women’s equal access to justice and the protection of women from gender‑specific violence during armed conflicts;
  • Inspire women leaders to be agents of change in policy making and community activism; and
  • Explore best practices for incorporating women’s presence in the military, police forces, and peace keeping missions.
